Our webmaster recommends the following free and open-source browsers and email clients together with settings for improved privacy and security. We can't keep everything up-to-date, nor provide more details; use at your own risk.

• TUTANOTA — Get your end-to-end encrypted* mailbox for free: Tutanota.com for your desktop and laptop browser, android (get the app from f-droid.org), and iOS. Not even Tutanota can read mails sent end-to-end encrypted through their service. Optionally (for 12 euro/year) you can send and receice secure emails with custom domain. The Tutanota's mail export function provides for mail import in Thunderbird which is usefull for searching messages, archiving and backup. (With free accounts, Tutanota's search function is limited.)

• DISMAIL.DE — If you don't need custom domain (e.g., yourname@yourdomain.com) for your email (which e.g., Tutanota allows; see above) or want to use an email-client instead of webmail or app, consider dismail.de which provides free online services based on principles of privacy*, security*, decentralization, and freedom:
  • XMPP - Decentralized instant messaging webchat - free
  • Email - Free (End-To-End encrypted*) email accounts for your IMAP/SMTP email client[s] (e.g.: open source
    • Thunderbird (see below),
    • K-9 Mail; preferably install it from f-droid.org or
    • delta.chat [yes, it's an email client; they don't even have a server!] only available from f-droid.org
    or via [dismail.de's] Webinterface
  • PrivateBin - Minimalist, open source, encrypted* online pastebin/discussion board - free
  • DNS - Free DNS resolver (with ad, malware and tracking filter) - free (search, e.g., "configuring dns server fritzbox 6840")
  • yadim - Yet another temporary email service (beta) - free
  • ESEL - Email server security list - free

  No advertising, no tracking, no profiling, no data mining, and no fancy website.

  Check-out the comparison table ESEL before you chose an email provider! ESEL the most comprehensive list I've ever seen — and it is not a self-ad that dismail.de ranks 3rd; IMHO if it allowed pop3s it'd be 1st rank. (Guess you won't need pop when you chose LocalInbox (local storage) in Thunderbird server settings for your dismail.de account; hence messages don't remain (depend) on the (availability) of any mail server**.)

  After your registered a dismail email account you must activate it; follow the instructions on the registration page. The activation is not instant. As reward for this little inconvenience, the procedure gives you the unique chance to make connaissance with their other neat, free service offer, namely webchat; it's driven by XMPP — in case you wondered — is the most secure messaging standard, battle-tested, independent, and privacy-focused.

  Your milage might vary but most probably long lasting satisfaction is guaranteed — so consider a donnation to dismail.

  Notes (quoted from dismail.de:
  *) Never trust anybody with your privacy, always encrypt[!]
  **) Please do yourself a favor and do not store any valuable data on any online service[!]

• Surfing with
  • Brave Browser, it's fast and offers build-in private/VPN browsing through Tor.

    Don't forget to install the brave extensions umatrix, ublock-origin, and flash-blocker-free or

  • Mozilla Firefox Browser (FF), the open-source and cross-platform web browser. It is small, fast, has tabbed browsing, and can block pop-up windows. Download and more ...

    Don't forget to
    1. install the FF extensions uBlock Origin (ad blocker), uMatrix (javascript blocker; requires configuration for each site), and FlashBlock
    For FF on Android (f-droid.org): Settings/Tools/Add-ons: install Adblock Edge, Toggle Javascript Enabled) or use FF Klar aka FF Focus.
    2. enable Cookies for current session only:
    2.1. in preferences/privacy, section "History/FF will:" select "use customs settings for history"
    2.2. for "Accept third party cookies" select "Never"
    2.3. for "Keep until" select "I close FF"

• Emailing with Mozilla Thunderbird (TB)

  Don't forget to
  1. deselect Compose messages in HTML format (tools/account settings/composing & addressing)
  2. block Loading of remote images in mail messages and deselect Javascript in mail messages (tools/options/advanced/privacy)
  3. select 'Never send a return receipt' (tools/options/advanced/return receipts)
  4. select [view message body as] simple HTML (view/view message body as ...) or plain text.

  On Android, instead of TB use [repeat from DISMAIL above] open-source one or both of the following:

  - K-9 Mail; preferably install it from f-droid.org. It allows multiple mail accounts and identities; you can chose between IMAP and POP. You can switch off Google account synchronisation. (The GMail app is no longer needed (our webmaster wouldn't even touch it) and may be disabled. Sadly GMail can't be uninstalled).

  - delta.chat [yes, it's an email client; they don't even have a server!] only available from f-droid.org

You might want to try Ubuntu (U) or another Linux distribution as an alternative to Windows.
U offers so-called dual-boot installation where you can keep your current Windows installation - in case you still need the latter; the boot-manager lets you choose which operating system to run. But this is not recommended. Alternatively, most Win stuff could also be done in a VirtualBox under Linux.

You might want to install U 18.04 LTS desktop version and then add the traditional Gnome Shell, i.e. install 'GNOME Flashback' or Mate as alternative to U's default Unity desktop.

The audio sound samples for our older releases are encoded with the free, open source, high quality Ogg Vorbis codec with at least 64 kbps offering good pre-listening quality. Many popular media players (VLC, foobar, audacious) directly support Ogg format. If your player does not, try the free Zinf Ogg- and MP3-player at Zinf.org or the OGG plugin for your media player. If you got problems downloading the Ogg sound samples (i.e. when instead of the download menu, the sound files are displayed as [weird] text in the browser), hit shift when you click on the download link or right-click and do "save link as".
